Cornerstone Retirement Community is a nonprofit, faith-based senior living community in Texarkana, Texas, established in 1996 as the first and only non-profit faith-based senior living option in the area. The community offers a full continuum of care services on one campus, including independent living, assisted living, memory support, long-term care nursing, short-term rehabilitation, and home health services. My mother is in the process of moving into an independent living apartment and the staff at Cornerstone as been great to work with. Very responsive and accommodating. i.e. shower stall handles, move in dates, help with her little dog. Ever Cornerstone team member that my Mother or her family has worked with has been great!

Update: I was contacted about two weeks ago and they are working on our issues. My mother is currently a resident in the memory care facility. She has been there a year in April. When we filled out the papers and had meeting with the advisor we told her mom preferred being called by her middle name, she hates her first name. They have never called her by her middle name no matter what I said. After the first month we gave up on that battle. It took a good 3 or 4 months to figure out her shower schedule and to this day she will go over a week without one. I have given her showers myself. I would change her bedding because they were not doing it. Mom is still fairly independent and can do some things on her own but there is a reason she is there. Another issue we have is meals. Shortly after moving in mom had to have two upper teeth extracted and changed from a partial to a full top denture. She still has a bottom partial. It took a month or more to get her on what is called mechanical soft food. They finely chop the meat or shred it. She is still on this. I can't seem to get it changed for her to eat regular food. We fill out her menu and some of the staff are aware that she can eat a piece of ham it doesn't have to be ground up or she can have cantelope instead of always getting peaches and cottage cheese. I have spoken or emailed with staff and so-called higher ups, some are no longer there. Problems may get handled for a week or two but if that staff member is moved or quits we are back to square one. Lack of communication between shifts and staff in general is a big issue. At this point I am at a loss as of what to do. When you have dementia any changes can cause set backs. I really don't want to move her but I need my mother's basic care taken care of, afterall we do pay quite a bit for room and board.

My family had to have ongoing conversations regarding providing basic hygiene, following appropriate dietary restrictions, and an incident where my mother was not picked up from an appointment until after midnight. It looks nice in the front...but the skilled care is another story all together. Watch your people carefully! P.S. We spoke to Steve, Aldin, your wound care nurse....but it did not help my mother's level of care. I think it was just a lack of caring. You can't fix that.
