My 99.5 yr. old mother was overdosed with Depakote by a house doctor in another facility. After 6 days hospitalized in a comatose state, with an acute toxic encephalopathy diagnosis, the hospital sent her for a two week palliative care assessment at the McKinney Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. The motive was to give us time to find a new facility, but the blessing was, THIS WAS THE FACILITY! She rallied for a weekend, but quickly returned to her cantankerous and condescending nature. Despite that challenge, there was not one person in this nursing facility that didn't have a smile on their face when passing them in the halls. Furthermore, not one was phased by having to deal with my mother's unpleasant disposition, but handled her with skill, finesse and genuine love, not just for their work but for the people for whom they were treating with genuine care. The Administrators, the Nurses, the Supporting Caretakers, social workers, the marketing personnel, all were frequently seen interacting with the residents, and all are rendering the most EXTRAORDINARY service to their community. When Mother died, they formed an honor corridor as she was rolled out with Amazing Grace playing on their speakers. Then a lead nurse offered a beautiful prayer at the front porch. Such a sweet tribute. The place definitely operates in the Spirit of God.
I am only giving 2 starts because some of the care team were nice. Possibly over worked, understaffed. I dont know why they failed my dad. He went to gain strength back after being treated in the hospital for a week. He went downhill the entire time he was in this rehab. He complained for days he was having trouble breathing, finally, after him yelling when no one came to the call light, it was determined his O2 machine was malfunctioning so they switched him to tanks. Due to the distance, I couldn't be there all of the time but twice that I was there, his tank ran dangerously low and one time, ran completely out! I had to run down the hall and find someone to help. I arrived for a visit about 2pm one day and he was unconscious! I alerted a nurse, she said he was probably sleepy. I trusted her but as I sat and tried to wake him, it wasn't working and I know my dad. Finally they called 911 about 330. No one could definitely tell the paramedics the last time he was fully alert. He ended up on a ventilator for a few days. We are now recovering in another rehab close to me after a week in the hospital to stabilize him. His O2 issues caused a massive build up of CO2 in his blood. It nearly killed him. He also had bed sores on his back side.
