This is my honest and transparent review. In some ways, San Rafael deserves 4 or 5 stars. The CNAs, nursing staff, rehabilitation techs, social services folks, and administrative staff make an effort to help my sister when she requests it - and they seem to take a few moments to let her know they understand her and care about her. She has been there nearly 2 years. My sister also says she thinks the food is quite good and serving sizes for each meal are large and include some type of dessert - which she likes. The med techs also are great about providing my sister with her scheduled medications. Concern areas (where rating stars were lost) center around the overall run down condition of the facility itself - roach issues, broken items (i.e. torn curtains, unsafe electrical outlets, stopped up plumbing, lack of prompt attention to cleaning up spills on the shared bathroom floors, slow (and often no) return of laundry to the resident from the facility’s laundry department, and occasional missed routine showers and bed changes). Nursing staff and the social worker seem to care when I report concerns, and they try to respond in a timely manner. But, the same problems crop up time and time again. Sometimes I wonder if there is sufficient financial backing for the operations of this facility - for routine upkeep, maintenance, repairs, supplies, and adequate CNA staffing and retention. I also have seen no first-hand evidence that the physician (Chief Medical Director) or other doctor (Psychiatrist, for example) has ever personally visited with my sister. I understanding that a Physician’s Assistant routinely reviews the notes entered by staff into my sister’s care document. And, the physician’s office is available to San Rafael nursing staff if a consultation is warranted. But this type of care-at-a-distance is not very assuring to my sister or to me. We feel very estranged from the medical staff above the level of the nurse’s level. Perhaps this is just the way nursing/rehab facilities function. I also find it frustrating and wasteful of my time when I call the facility’s central phone number. The phone may ring upwards of 15 times before someone answers, and then I am transferred to an endpoint that never answers the phone. In spite of my concerns and frustrations, I believe this facility has helped my sister reach her best health plateau. Working within budget constraints and facility shortcomings, the folks there have done their best to keep her protected, safe, and healthy (so far) despite the COVID pandemic. I am hoping the new ownership (as of July 2020) will address many of the concerns I’ve expressed. I appreciate the.dedication of staff to my sister’s well-being and to my family’s needs.

San Rafael has the kindest, hard working folks there trying to take care of my brother and others. I live several 100 miles away and cannot get down to see him like I would like. That said the very first time my mother and I visited the facility we were impressed with the cleanliness and pleasant atmosphere. It can not be easy to care for some of their clients, my brother being one since communication is difficult, but I was very pleased with the care he was receiving. I had considered moving him closer until I saw the excellent care he is receiving. Thank you everyone there for your love and care of my brother. God Bless you. P.S. My 91 year old mother is OCD and she was very happy with what she saw at your facility as well.

I was a little hesitant with getting my mother care with total strangers, I was very nervous and scared for her. Her first day was as expected hard for her, but when I talked to her the next day, she was happy, and she is slowly getting adjusted. I think what made things easy for my mother and myself is Kim, the staff, and moms nurse, they were very welcoming and loving towards both of us. My mom seemed very happy to be around them, and immediately started joking with them. Thank you Kim for keeping me informed during her adjustment period, I’m glad that you care and keep us aware of what’s going on. I heard nothing but good things about San Rafael from friends of mine that are nurses in Corpus. Once again thank you Kim, the staff and Nurses.
